The British Columbia provincial election in 2013 was held on May 14, 2013. The election was called by the incumbent Liberal Party Premier, Christy Clark, who had taken over from Gordon Campbell in 2011. The election saw a relatively low level of voter turnout, with approximately 52% of eligible voters casting a ballot.
The main issues in the 2013 election included healthcare, education, the economy, the environment, and the government's handling of the harmonized sales tax (HST). The Liberal Party campaigned on its economic record, emphasizing its efforts to balance the budget, create jobs, and attract investment to the province. The New Democratic Party (NDP) focused on social issues, promising to invest in healthcare, education, and affordable housing. The Conservative Party campaigned on a platform of tax cuts and reducing government spending.
In the end, the election resulted in a majority government for the Liberal Party, which won 49 seats in the 85-seat Legislative Assembly. The NDP won 34 seats, while the Conservative Party won 2 seats. Christy Clark remained as Premier of British Columbia, and her government continued to focus on economic growth and job creation.
However, the Liberal government's decision to introduce the HST in 2009 had become a major issue in the election, and Clark's government promised to hold a referendum on the tax. In 2011, the province had voted in a non-binding referendum to repeal the HST, and in 2013, the Liberal government followed through on that promise, reverting back to the previous system of a separate provincial sales tax and federal goods and services tax.
